This week wraps up round one of Chicks Empowered in Kunchubwe Village! We are so proud of all the hard work the ladies put in this first round of chicks!
Let's take a look at the process from day one:
Over the course of 35 days, the chicks received 4 rounds of vaccinations and consumed 3 different types of feed.
23 of the chicks died during round one, meeting industry standards of around 10% fatality.
Each chicken weighs over 2Kg at full grown and will sell for around $5/chicken.
As of September 21, 130 chicks were sold!!
With expectations that all sales would be completed by Friday, September 25!
The real story : The women
But the real story behind Chicks Empowered are not the chickens but the women of Kunchubwe participating in this project.
All of their hard work is evident in the health and growth of the chickens. Alexandre has visited the project twice a week since day one! Every week he shares progress updates on not only how the chickens are doing but also how the women are adjusting to the project.
We knew there would be lots of ways to define success with Chicks Empowered but one large goal was for the women to become entrepreneurial leaders in their community.
Throughout the past 35 days, the women have consistently been developing strategies and ideas of how to work efficiently and to produce the best results. They have created their own schedules, taken charge of managing inventory, and taken initiative to create a market for their chickens (including hut-to-hut sales and posting for sale signs)!
We have been excited about Chicks Empowered since the idea was first birthed in late May -- but to see real-life impacts so quickly is truly awe-inspiring for us.
This week, Alexandre asked the women to share why they are thankful for Chicks Empowered and we were truly touched by their responses:
"Deep thanks from the hearts of women" -Alexandre
Its hard to believe that this first round is already finished! We are thrilled at the results and excited to watch Chicks Empowered to continue to grow in Kunchubwe Village. From the bottom of all of our hearts we want to send a big thank you to everyone who has supported Chicks Empowered, you are truly making a difference!
